Curls Connect

Connecting ladies to stylists that excel in natural haircare for curls and coils.

The challenge

Booking natural hair appointments often requires DMs, long wait times, unclear pricing and difficulty finding services offered. Most platforms don’t cater to the needs of Black haircare clients, especially when it comes to protective styles and consultations.

This project aims to explore how the natural haircare booking process can be made more efficient for clients and stylists alike.

Design process

As this is a project I undertook solo, I did the elements of the design process that were under my control.

Strategy

Ultimately, the brand strategy aims to create a positive impact on the natural hair community by simplifying the salon booking process and enhancing access to specialized care.

The website aims to:

  • Simplify the booking process
  • Provide detailed salon information
  • Make finding high quality stylists easier

At the heart of the natural hair salon booking website’s brand strategy is the goal to create a reliable and trustworthy platform that serves the needs of the natural hair community.

Competitive Analysis

First place I went to for competitive analysis is somewhere I use a lot for my own stylist booking appointments. This is Treatwell. I then looked at Toni & Guy UK and Harrods.

Treatwell - Where beauty appointments can be made online
Toni&Guy UK - A professional salon that offers online booking
Harrods - A department store offering beauty treatment bookings online

Analysis

I took the opportunity here to look at what some potential user stories and a detailed persona could look like.

Design

In this phase, I looked at to making the requirements into reality. Looking at what the information architecture, a user flow could look like. Then translating that into wireframes and into high fidelity mockups and wireframes. I did this with the help of some moodboards to capture the vibe I wanted the site to have.

Deliver

Now, based on the structure given from the IA and user flow down pat. I created some wireframes, design system, branding and final high fidelity prototype.

Lessons Learned

This was a fun personal project, but still was a chance to apply concepts like branding, user flows, competitor analysis. It was nice to explore these things without the pressure of deadlines and be creative.
